Maheshwari Saree

Promotional Video

The Legend of Maheshwari sarees begins in 14th century where people from the maheshwar village started making sarees with their handlooms. It became famous throughout India and grown over centuries. During late 17th century when this tradition was under attack from British Colonisers, but it was saved from extinction by the then Queen of Holkar Kingdom, Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar. She was a great admirer of this tradition and insisted on keeping it alive by spending her own money and keeping the tradition alive from clutches of the British. She was also the one who started the Rehwa society to empower women, wherein a lot of handlooms were set up and women especially older women were given jobs to make sarees and earn money and have some financial safety. This was her thinking in the 18th century. Society is still functional to date and their products are still sold all over the world and are known for quality.

So when the opportunity came to write about a locally made product, there was only one thing on my mind and that was these Sarees. This is just not apparel, it is a centuries-old tradition, still alive in the beautiful town of Maheshwar(Attached pic above.)

And here is the promotional video.
